Architecture & Interiors
Architecture is an exceptionally broad and sophisticated subject which touches directly on the way we live our lives, and so its study is both fulfilling and pleasurable. The process of making architecture involves a broad range of theoretical and practical issues, meaning that a number of vocations are involved in its creation. Architects practice their profession in a variety of different ways, and as a result develop skills, knowledge and understanding from such experiences.
Architects are not just part of the construction industry: they are also artists, innovators, theorists and socially engaged practitioners. It is therefore the aim of each of the courses within the Department of Architecture to allow individuals to develop their own personal skills and knowledge in preparation for a challenging and rewarding career. The largest courses in the Department are geared explicitly towards the three stages of qualification required to become a professional architect in Britain, but a wide spectrum of other courses allow people to study in more detail aspects such as interior architecture, digital design and cultural studies. Students are regularly successful in major international architectural project competitions, and have won by far the largest total of RIBA Presidents Medal awards of any school around the world in recent years.
Teaching staff provide a healthy combination of full-time academics and part-time architectural practitioners, with many of them also engaged in high-level research in areas of design, architectural history and theory, sustainable technology and digital culture. The Department of Architecture at Westminster was rated as one of the top ten architectural schools for research in the recent 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). A major exhibition space, the P3 Gallery, is now available as a means to promote research activity. The Department also has a growing number of students now engaged on their own PhD research.
